FAQs

ANova is a student organization that seeks to empower students by providing computer science education and mentorship to under-resourced schools and marginalized communities. Our mentors develop individualized curriculum to teach at each of our middle and high school partner schools around the East Bay, with the goal of increasing equitable exposure and accessibility to the tech space.
We visit our partner schools on a weekly basis to mentor students and teach a project-based CS afterschool program. We also host ANova Hacks: a 24-hour hackathon for high school students with little to no programming experience. Over the course of the day, students work in teams to design and code an innovative idea aiming to solve real-world problems.
No, you don’t need any CS experience to join — as long as you’re willing to put in the time to learn! We encourage mentors of all majors, disciplines, and backgrounds to join our mentorship community. Many ANova members are not CS/EECS majors.
Keep in mind many of the students we encounter at site are new to coding. This means that much of the computer science concepts we teach are beginner-friendly.
Every member goes to site and is part of a committee.
Sites: 1 site visit × 2 hours/site = 2 hours/week
Site prep: 30min/week
Committee: 2-3 hours/week
General Meetings (Tuesdays 7-8:30PM): 1-1.5 hours/week
The approximate total time commitment for an active member is 5-6.5 hours a week.
You can express interest in any committee that sparks your interest — read more about our committees here — but this will not factored into your application.
Your preference for committees will only be taken into account after you get into the club! All new members will be entered into a committee-matching process that will last the first few weeks. You can change your committee every semester.

Nope! Content at both info sessions are the same, so feel free to attend whichever one works better with your schedule.
